ABSTRACT:

This study investigates uniaxial compression deformation behavior of micrometer-, millimeter-, and centimeter-sized samples of the Woodford Shale. Micro-scale geomechanical testing was performed by crushing twenty-five 10-µm diameter pillars (micro-pillars) with a nanoindenter. These micro-pillars were microfabricated with a focused ion beam (FIB) – scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results were compared with macro-scale uniaxial compression tests on fifteen 2.5-mm diameter samples (macro-pillars) and two 25-mm diameter samples. Compressive stress-strain, strength, and Young’s modulus were determined for all tested samples. SEM was used to investigate pre- and post-compression micro-pillars.
