Abstract

The study focuses on the shape design and numerical analysis of a 1MW horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATCT), for the southwest regions of Korea. The hydrodynamic performance including the lift and drag forces, is conducted using an open source code of X-Foil. The new hydrofoil, MNU26, has a 26% thickness to chord length ratio that can be applied throughout the blade length. Cavitation is also investigated for the MNU26 hydrofoil. Results show that the MNU26 hydrofoil has higher lift coefficients and also a higher lift to drag ratio in contrast to S814 and DU91-W2-250 hydrofoils. In addition the new hydrofoil has low probability of cavitation making it safe for TCT application.
