Abstract
Moored oceanic data buoys measure ocean properties and transmit the data to land via satellites. The current battery power system for these operations requires significant expenses for replacing an old battery with a new battery regularly. To reduce the costs and use the green energy, this paper proposes an application of adopting a wave energy conversion (WEC) device as their permanent or semi-permanent power source. Numerical simulations of the motions of a buoy are performed by the wave-body analysis software, COUPLE. Based on the predicted motions of a buoy, produced electrical energy is estimated by applying an iterative scheme to estimate equivalent damping of a hydraulic system as its Power Take-Off (PTO) system.
