The principles of design for production have recently been updated to apply to commercially competitive shipyards, as published in the updated Design For Production Manual. Among the key areas that have been updated are the use of computers, automation, and quality technologies. An overall approach to the culture change required to instill design for production in a shipyard is a key ingredient in this application. An initial implementation has begun at NASSCO. This paper reports on the application of the updated principles and describes their use at NASSCO.
