In June 2017, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures is expected to adopt the recently completed AASHTO/NSBA S8.2, SSPC-PA 18 – Specification for Application of Thermal Spray Coatings on Steel Bridges1. This specification was the collective work of over 50 stakeholders within the AASHTO/NSBA Collaboration group TG8 (Coatings), including thermal spray coatings (TSC) applicators, bridge owners, engineers, and inspectors. This new specification establishes and defines the functions, operations, requirements, and activities needed to achieve consistent quality in TSC application for steel bridges. It is based on a cooperative approach to achieving quality, where both the owner’s and applicator’s representatives work together with a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, resulting in metallizing of steel bridges and components completed in an efficient manner. This paper provides an overview and the highlights of this specification.
In June, 2017, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Sub-Committee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS) unanimously adopted a new specification for the application of thermal spray coatings (TSC). It is entitled: AASHTO/NSBA S8.2, SSPC-PA 18 – Specification for Application of Thermal Spray Coatings on Steel Bridges1 (S8.2). It is a joint document between AASHTO, the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA), and the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC). This paper is a summary of the document and primarily focuses on the history of its development.
COVERNING SPECIFICATION ON THERMAL SPRAY COATING
S8.2 is a document that is meant to be used in conjunction with SSPC-CS 23.00/ American Welding Society (AWS) C2.23/ NACE International—The Corrosion Society (NACE) No.12, ”Specification for the Application of Thermal Spray Coatings (Metallizing) of Aluminum, Zinc, and Their Alloys and Composites for the Corrosion Protection of Steel”2 and is referred to as the Joint Standard in S8.2. S8.2 addresses aspects of TSC that are not covered by the Joint Standard, either because these aspects were considered to be outside the scope of that standard, or because stakeholders in the bridge coating industry felt that more was required.
