Abstract

Eni is fully committed to ensure the best safety standards at work. Safety of operations is not only a priority to guarantee the business continuity but also a fundamental value, shared by all employees, contractors, and stakeholders.

People are the starting point and the final goal of all actions with the common target of promoting safe and healthy behavior in any workplace and, more in general, in everyday life.

From the analysis of the main occupational safety events in Eni, most of them occurred during routine operations and the so-called "human factor" being the primary root cause representing 80% of all accidents and near misses.

In particular, most of the incidents are related to:

- Incorrect perception of risk and overconfidence.

- Inadequate planning of activities and lack of supervision.

- Poor communication, including ineffective toolbox talks and inadequate circulation of the information among working team.

- Failure to comply with operating procedures.

Competence and knowledge about technical specific topics and minimum safety standards for safe operations play an important role on the above-mentioned causes of incidents and especially on low-risk perception.

Increasing competence means improving the perception of risk, therefore it’s crucial to reinforce the knowledge and awareness related to technical and safety matters. That’s why Eni developed in 2019 a web-based tool called "Safety Competence Assessment - SCA" aiming at identifying all the safety areas that might need a specific, customized, and effective training to fill competence gaps and strengthening safety at work site by increasing the risk perception and awareness of their supervisors, which are the main target of this program.

In addition, technical competence assessment on specific disciplines such as Well Operations, Logistics, Production and Maintenance was included in the SCA tool to ensure adequate knowledge of technical processes.
