Quantitative Interpretation (QI) of land seismic data is typically more challenging than for its marine seismic counterpart. Some companies have significantly reduced their land seismic efforts in the last ~5-10 years. However, land seismic QI has seen recent significant improvement with some companies having success. These recent successes are a result of dramatic improvement in land seismic data acquisition, moderate improvement in processing, improved interpretation tools, and more careful application of QI. In our view of the road ahead, improvements in all four areas will be more limited. Land seismic QI is still challenging. However, there is opportunity for further significant improvement by better addressing the significant distortion of the seismic wavelet at the source and receiver and incorporating uncertainty information in the QI measurements.
