Various stacking pattern of sandstone and mudstone in Bohai S oilfield, such as thin layer, thick layer and thin interbeds. How to accurately predict sandstone thickness is very important. In order to find a suitable attribute to calculate sandstone thickness, we conducted extensive numerical simulations. Firstly, different models are made for 2D forward modeling, and many records are obtained. Then we extracted amplitude, frequency attribute, we built a new composite attribute from RMS amplitude and the sum of positive (negative) amplitudes to predict the sandstone thickness. The method is proved to be accurate by many types of geological models. Through the practical application in Bohai S oilfield, we accurately predicted sandstone thickness of the target area, and nearly 4 million tons of reserves were found. Our research also built the foundation for the application of seismic composite attributes in predicting sandstone thickness.
