Hydraulic fracturing stimulates the flow of gas or oil in a shale play by activating or creating microcracks in a target formation. The identifications of the location and the fracturing type of these ruptures are critical information for such efforts. In this study, we show that a full waveform moment tensor inversion is an objective way to provide this information with a case study using real microseismic data from the Permian Basin.
