In this paper, we present an alternative form to directly recover Green’s functions, which includes both internal and free-surface multiples. The proposed method does not use focal functions, as typically required by the conventional Marchenko method, and it can therefore be implemented at a reduced computational cost. The solution of the direct method can be found through two distinct approaches: the first is an iterative procedure based on the Neumann series expansion, whereas the second employs a least-squares based formulation. Starting from Marchenko’s equations, we obtain a system of equations to retrieve the Green’s functions and we characterize the system’s resolution in the three described methods. Using a synthetic dataset, we compute the Green’s functions, and compare the results. Based on numerical examples, it is demonstrated that our proposed direct method provides an efficient way to compute the Green’s functions including the free-surface multiple reflections.
