The crucial parameter for modeling the subsurface geothermal gradient and creating a heat flow map is the thermal conductivity. The lateral variation of thermal conductivity data from cores is rare, giving rise to the need to apply an indirect method to estimate the thermal conductivity. Seismic velocity and thermal conductivity have a similar response to some petrophysical parameters, such as porosity and the clay fraction. Both increase with a decrease in porosity and clay fraction. A linear relationship can be used to calculate the thermal conductivity from seismic velocity. Thus, 3D thermal conductivity models can be gained by building velocity models wherever seismic surveys are available. The calculated thermal conductivity model for the Tonga Block, Central Sumatra Basin, showed a good correlation with the seismic model.
