We propose and demonstrate a method for determining optimal velocity fields from semblance scans. The proposed approach finds a velocity field that minimizes the cost of a velocity surface within a semblance scan, allowing picked velocity fields to incorporate information from gathers that are spatially near the midpoint in question. The minimization process amounts to solving a non-linear elliptic partial differential equation, which we perform using a gradient descent scheme. We find that the method is able to determine a plausible velocity field in a field data experiment, but that successful implementation is highly dependent on the choice of starting model.
