A novel meshfree method is proposed for forward modeling 2-D magnetotelluric (MT) data, which is a type of electromagnetic (EM) data with plane-wave source fields. The modeling method is adapted from a recent algorithm designed for 3-D MT modellings by the authors. A potential advantage of a meshfree model discretization is that issues related to stability and efficiency in generating quality meshes in order to conform to complex geometries in an earth model can be avoided. The proposed meshfree method also supports the use of unstructured points and avoids numerical quadrature. The effectiveness and accuracy of the method are verified by using two benchmark conductivity models.
