As an integral part of exploration geophysics, rock physics is a fascinating field that can aid answering many scientific questions beyond applications in petroleum. It might not always be called rock physics, but our field helps us understand how to monitor the injection of foreign fluids such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen into a reservoir, geological processes in volcanoes and faults, all the way to subsurface characterization of the planet Mars.
