Abstract
Effective partnership models are essential in achieving successful project management, productive collaboration, and responsible operations. Each model, whether established via traditional contracting or set up as a joint venture (JV), presents unique technical, personnel and assurance challenges. Because JVs are built on resource pooling and shared expertise, they often contend with complexities in governance, cultural integration, and joint accountability. Addressing these issues requires a strong corporate commitment combined with robust policies and procedures, effective communication strategies and an investment in change management.
This paper explores the methods employed in the successful partnership between Nabors and KazMunayGas (KMG) in the formation of KMG Nabors Drilling Company LLP (KNDC) and illustrates how following those same methods has enabled the JV to grow while educating and training local personnel and maintaining proficient execution of drilling programs. The objective is to present the strategies and models that enabled effective collaboration to create a highly functioning JV and provide examples that demonstrate that this goal was—and continues to be—achieved.
