Abstract
Specific aspects of reservoir damage, particularly associated with clays are well defined but are seldom considered in total with respect to loss of additive effectiveness due to possible negative reactions in a clay environment.
Significant losses of additives and subsequent additive effectiveness are suggested and documented with emphasis on various clay control methods in the presence of various key clay families.
Tendencies for additive incompatibilities in various clay and fines environments within sensitive reservoirs will be outlined. Various methods to prevent damage when using these additives will be discussed including overcoming loss of performance in situ due to adsorption onto high surface area clay coatings.
Finally, methods for removing damage from immediate wellbore regions will be discussed and a new technique using specific pH buffered alcohols will be discussed with respect to system description and mechanism.
