This paper describes sand control failure of a well in Bohai Bay which has experienced four workovers and one acid treatment. This well adopted cased-hole premium screen completion initially, changed to another premium screen completion in the 2nd workover and gravel packed in the 4th workover. An extensive data collection and analysis were performed to relate the cause of sand control failure to reservoir data, formation sand characteristics, sand control method, premium screen sizing and so forth. Comparison between targeted well and offset wells has also been conducted to evaluate which kinds of sand control methods are appropriate for the given formation. A number of design and operational guidelines have been suggested for a suitable completion method.
