The efficient extraction of oil that is free from gas is a complex process that has historically been oversimplified. By oversimplified, I mean that the industry as a whole has relied on the research and data that states that gas break out from fluid happens at 6″/s bubble rise velocity. We have learned with the maturity of wells and over production tactics, that more is happening beyond the 6″/s baseline thinking. We have learned that gas issues and handling now involves the understanding and management of multiphase flow regimes. Understanding the phase at which the flow is occurring is crucial for optimizing production, especially when utilizing downhole gas separators. This research paper explores the concept of using the not only the annulus but also the entire bottom hole assembly of a rod pumped well to better manage gas interference. It also explores the importance of comprehending multiphase vertical flow regimes and how they occur.
