An objective evaluation of different propulsion concepts for naval frigates has been demonstrated. Based on an assumed operation profile and weighting of criteria stated herein, hybrid-propulsion arrangements incorporating electric drives have been observed to optimally meeting the specified requirements commonly observed across most navies. The demonstrated evaluation shows that the resultant propulsion plant configurations may not fully achieve all defined requirements, which are often conflicting, but represent a good compromise to best meet the operation requirements based on defined priorities. Development of innovative propulsion gear systems for these options then become a key step in transforming the developed concept into a feasible tailored design.
