Abstract
Drilling in highly fractured, high pressure, high temperature gas fields presents various drilling challenges including loss of circulation, gas kicks and hole instability due to the presence of fractures, reactive shale and abnormally pressurized formations.. The original design of the wells was modified to meet these challenges and improvements have been successfully implemented.. These improvements include changes to the original well design, drilling fluid design and drilling practices and these improvements have reduced the problems that were encountered in the troublesome 16”, 12”, & 8⅜” hole sections.. This paper will discuss the different solutions implemented and other solutions being investigated to eliminate the drilling difficulties encountered while drilling HP/HT formations in deep hole sections.
