This paper presents the results of foundation analyses, design, and field load testing for a structure founded in super-saline permafrost conditions. It describes the selection of driven steel pipe piles as the foundation system. The pile bearing capacity analysis was based on frictional resistance only, with no contribution from frozen bonding between the pile and the soil. Pile load test data for saline permafrost conditions relating stress, strain, and time behavior are presented. Driven steel piles of adequate cross sectional area and having proper tip configuration can be installed by traditional driving techniques in certain permafrost conditions. Moreover, a driven steel pile foundation for arctic coastal structures can be the most cost effective foundation approach in some instances.
